What is Functional cosmetics?

A Korean regulatory category, defined under the Cosmetics Act, covering products that make specified efficacy claims. There are eleven recognised types, including whitening/brightening, anti-wrinkle, UV protection, hair-loss relief, hair dyeing and removal, self-tanning, and relief for dry or atopic-prone skin.

Why does Functional cosmetics matter when sourcing Korean cosmetics?

Each requires MFDS review with supporting efficacy data and, for many claims, a designated active at a set concentration — which is why so many Korean formulas cluster on exact percentages. The designation does not transfer abroad, but the underlying dossier is often reusable for your own market's claim substantiation.
